The Edge — Follow the money beyond the headline
The headline number is where an investigation starts. This edition follows three different paths: Microsoft’s company-wide FY2026 buildout through cash payments, unpaid equipment and new lease assets; NVIDIA’s historical Q1FY2026 H20 charge through inventory and purchase obligations, with later reserve releases kept in view; and Circle’s Q2FY2026 revenue through distribution costs, before operating expenses and other items. Read them in that order. Our recurring question is simple: what does this number measure, and what sits outside it?
01 / follow the money
Microsoft’s capex has three clocks.
Cash paid, equipment still payable and new finance leases describe different moments in the same buildout. Read each on its own clock before drawing a conclusion.
Correction. Restored legible labels in the newsletter chart. Reported figures, periods and interpretation are unchanged.
The qualification. The three disclosures do not establish a funding problem or a good investment. They cover the whole company, and the payable balance may turn over within the year. This is an accounting map, not an AI valuation model.
The next test. On the next filing, compare cash PPE additions with the same prior-year period, then inspect the payable balance and lease additions separately. Ask what changed in timing before attributing the movement to demand.

02 / buried in the filing
The H20 bill had two addresses.
A historical case study in how a product shock reaches both inventory and commitments to buy more. The split explains what a single charge can hide.
Correction. Restored legible labels in the newsletter chart. Reported figures, periods and interpretation are unchanged.
The qualification. This historical split cannot establish today’s export-control exposure or the economics of a different chip. Subsequent releases matter. NVIDIA’s FY2026 results reported a $180m H20 reserve release in Q2, with insignificant releases in Q3 and Q4.
The next test. For a new product restriction, inspect inventory provisions and purchase-obligation charges separately, then track later reversals. Verify the product name, reporting quarter and relevant rules before comparing episodes.

Follow the stablecoin dollar past distribution.
Circle’s revenue headline is the beginning of the economics. The next stop is distribution, transaction and other costs. Profit comes later.
Correction. Restored legible labels in the newsletter chart. Reported figures, periods and interpretation are unchanged.
The qualification. This partial bridge cannot tell you net profit, cash conversion or one partner’s economics. The cost bucket includes multiple kinds of costs, and rounded figures limit precision. Network transaction activity is a different measure from issuer revenue.
The next test. When the next results arrive, compare the same cost categories and periods. Separate circulation, reserve return and partner distribution terms. Look for a disclosed driver before attributing a margin movement to any single partner.
